I may have some hoarder tendancies but I, also like to get creative and make messes.

My parents grew up in West Virginia during the late 50’s and their parents grew up in the depression. It was probably harder than I could EVER imagine and thus my Mom NEVER threw anything away. Please tell me someone else understands me???? All those plastic to-go containers, butter tubs, rubber bands, screws from projects you swore were “extra.” Things you would one day FIX, or that you would FOR SURE need ONE DAY were always saved…. For those of you cringing…….I’m so GUILTY, GUILTY, GUILTY.

Ok, I’m trying to be better and my line of work doesn’t help. I see plenty of extra tile, appliances that need rehoming and hardware that quote “doesn’t fit.” When these items cant be returned, I sometimes think I can use them, somehow, as if to resurrect the depression from saving the small items from impending doom at the dump. Not however thinking about the impending doom they cause at home by taking up more garage space.

All I can do is try, and try I will!!!! This open space is a great start! Now I just need to be thoughtful on what I bring back into it.

You saw my plan from last week and to be completely honest, I my IKEA cabinet arrival came while I was having a yard sale and we couldn’t even put the items inside the garage. Alright, this may be my “rock bottom” as we do live in Oregon and rain has already begun. I don’t have any more excuses or time, I better figure this out. And FAST!

Garage empty…..but mess in driveway……Hopefully I can figure this all out……And I need to keep reminding myself: SELL-DONATE-TOSS-SELL-DONATE-TOSS

I cleaned it out, took a few loads to the Habitat for Humanity Restore, ordered a dumpster from ECR (they recycle almost everything) and got ready to paint. I couldn’t wait to get rid of the purple walls and graffiti that has been here since I moved in twelve years ago. And those purple walls……purple ceilings and PURPLE everything……All I can say is that this paint job wasn’t my finest, but it didn’t need to be, it will mostly be covered by cabinets but those ceilings were ~ insert swear word here ~.

PSSSSST…..I primer & paint with a giant 18” roller, these are my secret weapon, but soon realized even this purple paint was not match for it. I needed to bring in the big guns, and I thought that meant buying a sprayer. I bought the FLEXiO 3550 18V Cordless Handheld HVLP Paint and Stain Sprayer. Turns out that sprayer didn’t work so well for the ceilings, I didn’t think of that part, but it did help me get everything else done really quick. And the wall paint, well….the discount gods called and I answered. When I was at Home Depot they had a Scuff Defense from Behr paint on sale and I grabbed it. I wasn’t 100% sure about the color, but I decided to rationalize the cost of the sprayer with the discount of the paint. It was worth it!

TOP 3 PAINTING TIPS- AND 1 BONUS

  1. BUY HIGH QUALITY PAINT- Cheaper paint, means MANY, MANY coats.

    2. USE A HIGH QUALITY BRUSH OR 18” ROLLER- You probably don’t NEED a sprayer and honestly it won’t solve all the problems. It’s still a ton of work and you’ll need to go back and touch up.

    3. PUT THE TIME IN PREP- taping off and priming is the actual job, painting is literally the last step. I’m also terrible about this……I’m so impatient.

BONUS- This may be obvious, but you can’t spray a ceiling with a cordless sprayer. You’ll need to do this the OLD FASHIONED WAY! At least I couldn’t, too heavy to hold and paint wont spray through since it’s at a weird angle.

Use a little roller for those hard to reach spots, (large nap for texture, foam for smooth)

Check out what other One Week Challengers are up to in Week 2- LOTS of amazing work going on!

Alright……See you in a little less than a week, this post was late! I’m hoping to start on the cabinets after all the painting. Don’t tell anyone but I LOVE RTB(ready-to-build) anything.
